Turtle Rock was established in 1967 as one of Irvine's original villages and the first hillside village on the Irvine Ranch, set in the San Joaquin Hills in ZIP 92603 and bordered by University Drive and Mason Regional Park, Ridgeline Drive, Shady Canyon Drive and Culver Drive. Turtle Rock Drive loops through it, and the village is named for a 20-ton rock that sits in a small park on Rockview Street.

Turtle Rock was built from the late 1960s through 1995, so the tract matters more than the village. Broadmoor holds some of the earliest homes, single-story ranch houses on hilly lots. Most of the village went up through the 1970s and 1980s, including the Hills, the Terraces and Highlands Garden, and the Summit tract was finished in 1995. Many early homes have been remodeled while original systems remain, so an updated interior is no guide to the age of the door, opener or springs.
