The City of Orange holds the only Eichler tracts in Orange County: Fairhaven from 1960, Fairmeadow from 1962 and Fairhills from 1964, just under 350 homes built by Eichler Homes to designs by A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons. Fairhaven runs along Fernwood, Kirkwood, Cedarwood and Oakwood; Fairmeadow along Palmdale, Ferndale, Glendale and Winlock; Fairhills along Encanto, Corrida, San Remo and Elsinore. In November 2018 the City Council designated all three as local historic districts, with design standards covering street-visible changes, so owners who bought before then may not realize the rules apply.

The garage door is a large part of an Eichler's flat, horizontal street front, so it is one of the most visible features on the house. A raised-panel door with carriage styling or decorative hardware is exactly wrong on this architecture. Flush panel doors, horizontal long-panel designs and clean-lined modern doors made for mid-century homes are the right answer, and some owners add a horizontal band of glass to echo the original detailing. That is also the design most likely to be approved at staff level through Minor Design Review, while a door that fights the architecture goes to the Design Review Committee. Eichlers are post-and-beam with exposed beams, little attic space and flat or low-pitch roofs, so headroom is often limited and there is rarely ceiling structure to hang an opener the usual way. Original hardware is long past its life, panels are discontinued and original openers predate 1993.
