Lido Isle is a dredged island in Newport Harbor, raised above the tide line after W. K. Parkinson bought the mudflat in 1923, and its single bridge from Via Lido is still the only way on or off. About 800 homes sit on compact lots along streets almost all named Via, with Via Lido Nord and Via Lido Soud running the length of the island. Garages are often at the street face on narrow Via streets, and homes with strand frontage have no vehicle access on the water side, so everything goes in and out through the street-facing garage.

The Lido Isle Community Association has its own architectural standards, and a garage door on a Via frontage is one of the most visible features of a house, so association review comes first, then the city. A door replacement can involve three parties: the association, the building division and possibly coastal review if the opening changes.
